– We need clean energy in order to avoid an environmental disaster and to meet the world’s growing energy needs. But a large share of the subsidies goes to projects that will never be profitable. On the contrary, the subsidies are distorting the market and have inflated a financial bubble. A crash within the renewable energy market can cause ripple effects across the economy and heavily delay the transition to sustainable energy. Subsidies are often necessary during a transition period. But truly sustainable energy is also financially and commercially sustainable. Within three to five years it needs to bear its own costs, says Per Wimmer.
